Alan FitzWalter

I was so excited when I discovered this man in my research for The Third Order. He was born around 1140 and succeeded his father as the Steward of Scotland. His father was Walter FitzAlan: the "Fitz" means "son of." He was a Crusader and did indeed travel with Richard the Lionheart in the Third Crusade, returning to Scotland in 1191. He died in 1024, and by 1293 a descendant adopted the last name Steward, which became Stuart in the next generation.... the genesis of the House of Stuart that claimed the throne of Scotland, leading to Bonnie Prince Charlie of ignominious fame.

The story of Saladin's gift of a horse is true, as is the slaughter of 2,000 men

for want of ransom.
